This Fight Video From Denny’s In Amherst Shows Why Police Need Our Support
February 14, 2012
UPDATE: A pretty heated argument has broken out on my Facebook page about whether or not the officer should have used a taser on the suspect in this incident. Two people who were actually there when this fight broke out commented on the post. Here are their quotes:
“I was eating at dennys when this broke out. the cop was outnumbered when he first showed up waiting on back up and they were being hostile the use of the tazer was indeed necessary.”
“I was there as well . . . the tazer was necessary .”
This video, which was taken on a cell phone during a disturbance at the Amherst Ohio Denny’s on February 12, is a great example of why our local police forces deserve our support and gratitude.
I was told that three people ended up getting arrested by Amherst Police, and more should have probably been arrested.
When the officers arrived, someone yelled to them “they have knives!” (referring to someone in the crowd). One officer grabbed a female who he identified as an active participant in the disturbance. The female pulled away and her shirt was ripped, then she turned on the officer and tried to punch him. The officer utilized his taser and struck the female in the chest with the probes, and she fell to the ground.
The female who was subdued with the taser was handcuffed and arrested. Her sister also approached the officers, yelling and screaming, and she was also arrested. One employee of Denny’s was punched in the jaw. The male who punched him was identified in the crowd, and officers had to fight with him to arrest him.
What happened in this video doesn’t happen every night in Amherst, but it is not a unique occurrence. This is why our police officers train, buy protective equipment, and train some more. Luckily, there were three officers available to respond to this disturbance . . . in many cases, however, one officer is tied up on another call and unavailable to respond.
Remember: the most important role of government is to keep us safe. Our police officers fill this dangerous role without complaint, and I hope you will join me in thanking them for the great job they do.
