Phil Stammitti is the sheriff of Lorain County, Ohio.  A Democrat, Stammitti has has served as Lorain County Sheriff for three four-year terms.  Stammitti recently announced that he will seek a fourth term as Sheriff in the 2012 Lorain County election.

UPDATE: Stammitti is being challenged in the 2012 General Election by Audali (AJ) Torres, a Republican.  Stammitti faces no opposition in the March 2012 Democratic primary race.

Stammitti was not challenged for re-election in 2008, but Rich Resendez, who used to be a sheriff’s captain, has announced that he will challenge Stammitti in the 2012 Democratic Primary campaign (which will take place in May).  Resendez, who once also worked for the City of Lorain Police Department, now is employed at the Grafton North Coast Correctional Treatment Facility as an investigator.

There aren’t yet any Republican or Independent candidates who have announced that they are interested in running for Lorain County Sheriff in 2012.

UPDATE: Rich Resendez is no longer challenging Phil Stammitti for the Sheriff’s seat, but has announced he will challenge Lori Kokoski for the Democratic nomination for Lorain County Commissioner in 2012.

The department is funded by the Lorain County Commissioners board, made up of Ted Kalo, Lori Kokoski and Tom Williams.
