Is Phil Van Treuren Running for Commissioner to Lay Off Lorain County Workers?

lorain county government employeesAs a candidate for public office, I expect my opponents to spread misinformation.  That’s something that every candidate has to deal with, regardless of what office they’re running for.

But there’s one rumor that bothers me more than the rest, specifically because it’s a relevant issue and it runs counter to what I believe.  Here’s the rumor: if Phil Van Treuren is elected commissioner, he will end up laying off Lorain County government workers.

I’ll clarify that right now by saying it simply isn’t true.  I’ve never brought up the topic of cutting the county workforce, and I won’t be pursuing that agenda if I’m elected.  Personally, I believe there are plenty of other effective ways that Lorain County can cut wasteful spending and protect taxpayer dollars.

This is a boogeyman that the Good-Old-Boys Gang has conjured up in the past to seed doubts about candidates who are challenging the establishment, though, and to a certain degree it has worked for them.

I appreciate the role that unions have played in making our country the great place that it is today.  And I believe that the vast majority of Lorain County employees are hard-working, dependable people who earn the paychecks they are given.   I believe that we can be good stewards of taxpayer money without laying off hard-working employees.

If you’re a Lorain County employee, you can email me personally at philvant@gmail.com.  I’ll be happy to answer any specific questions you might have, and will always keep our interactions private.
