Dennis Clotz has served as the Director of Public Safety and Service for Mayor David Taylor during the last eight years. This position is appointed by the Mayor, and he is in charge of supervising the fire department, Amherst police department, and Amherst building department. The service director is also in charge of overseeing the public works of other City departments such as sewer, water, electric and streets.

Amherst’s City Council consists of the Clerk of Council, the Council President, and seven elected council members. City Council members serve two year terms, and the Council President serves a four-year term.

There are three At-Large members of Amherst Council. These three councilpersons are elected by a vote of the entire city. The top three vote-getters in the Council At-Large race are elected to these positions every two years.

At-Large council members who filed for re-election as of February 2011 were Phil Van Treuren and Frank Janik. Also filing to run for Amherst Council At-Large was Steven J. Mihalcik, a Democrat. The deadline has not yet passed for Independent candidates to file.) UPDATE: Joe Miller, an Independent candidate, has filed to run for City Council At-Large in the 2011 general election.
