Amherst Ohio City Hall: 206 South Main, Amherst OH 44001
The Amherst Ohio City Hall is located at 206 South Main Street. It houses the offices of the Amherst Mayor, the Clerk of Council, and the Amherst City Council chambers. You can call City Hall during business hours on weekdays at (440) 988-4380, or email the Mayor at mayor@amherstohio.org.
Amherst city hall is a historical building that was constructed from sandstone from local quarries. Amherst, which was once known as the “sandstone capital of the world,” once provided the stone for building projects across the country. To this day, many historical buildings can be found in the city that were constructed using locally quarried sandstone.
The current Mayor of Amherst is David Taylor, who serves in the position full-time (as does his assistant). The City Council usually has regular meetings in the council chambers at city hall once every two weeks on Mondays, with committee meetings occurring on alternating weeks.
Amherst City Hall once housed the local Amherst police department on the lower level, but the department has been relocated to a larger, more modern facility. Additionally, a second floor with high ceilings and a stage is currently closed to the public and is not currently in use by the City of Amherst.
The City Hall is also used for various other committee, department and local organizational meetings. City council meetings and council committee meetings are regularly broadcast on the local Amherst cable access channel, which is operated out of a studio located at Amherst High School.
Any questions about Amherst City Hall, its history and public usage should be directed to the Mayor’s office.
