Phil Van Treuren’s Story: All About Phil Van Treuren
Dear Neighbors:
I’m a candidate in the 2012 Lorain County Commissioner race for the seat currently held by incumbent politician Ted Kalo. I’m running because I think our elected officials need to start leading by example when it comes to being fiscally responsible with taxpayer money.
My family has lived in Lorain County for more than a century. My great-great grandfather was a survivor of the infamous Johnstown flood in 1889, and he came to Lorain to work at the steel mill and take care of his family.
I
‘m proud to have been born here and wouldn’t want to raise my children anywhere else in the world.
My grandparents are my heroes. My grandfather was a union worker at the Ford Plant in Lorain for 38 years, an Army veteran, and he taught me about the importance of hard work, responsibility and family.
My ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I and World War II. I was proud to follow in their footsteps and join the Ohio Army National Guard in 2004.
Our Officer Candidate class started out with nearly 50 candidates, and only six of us made it through the program. It was the most difficult thing I ever did in my life, but I believe that
anything worth having is worth working hard for.
I absolutely love being an underdog. I love fighting for what’s right, no matter what the odds are.
In 2009, I ran my first campaign for Amherst City Council At-Large. I walked more than 400 miles and knocked on doors while wearing my Army Combat Boots, and was honored to be the top vote-getter in the city. I don’t win through dirty campaigning or compromising my principles; I win by caring for my constituents and working hard.
Being a good father and husband is the most important thing in my life. When I look at my daughter, I realize that we need to be responsible with taxpayer money so that children in Lorain County have a promising future.
I don’t think that government or
politicians make communities great. I think our families make our communities great.
I hear some politicians talk about how we should spend the government’s money, but to me, the government doesn’t have any money. It’s the taxpayers’ money, and government needs to be accountable to the people who work hard every day to take care of their families.
I wasn’t elected to focus on partisanship or political parties, and I never will. I’ve proven to my constituents that I’ll work hard for them whether they’re Democrats, Republicans or Independents. I’m going to work very hard to earn the respect of Lorain County’s families, and I’ll never forget that our government is responsible to them, NOT the other way around.
I’d be honored to receive your help, and I hope you’ll donate a small amount to my campaign or volunteer to lend a hand. Thanks so much for your support!
Sincerely,

Phil Van Treuren
