A Message to Lorain County Libertarian Party Members from Phil Van Treuren
My name is Phil Van Treuren, and I’m a 2012 candidate for Lorain County Commissioner for the seat currently held by two-term Democrat incumbent politician Ted Kalo.
I’m not a Libertarian Party candidate, but I’m very proud of the many libertarian viewpoints that I hold. I’d like to briefly outline some of the political goals we have in common, and humbly ask for your support in the general election this November.
First, I’m adamantly against raising Lorain County’s sales tax, and believe that an overall environment of lower taxes is one of the best ways to promote private sector growth in our county. Even though Lorain County sales tax revenue is projected to hit a record level this year, Ted Kalo is still pushing for even higher taxes.
Lorain County voters have overwhelmingly voted down a sales tax increase in the past, but my opponent has made it clear that he knows better than they do. I’ve promised to listen to Lorain County’s residents and look for other ways to increase county revenue and cut unnecessary costs.
Secondly, I strongly believe that reducing unnecessary regulations is one of the most effective things that local government can do to expand and attract business. Although I think some regulation is necessary for public safety, I generally believe that government intervention acts as a hindrance to the private sector.
The best thing that government can do to encourage economic growth is get out of the way, let the private sector do what it does best, and not try to pick winners and losers.
Finally, I’m a strong believer in the power of localized government, and I think that the government which is closest to the people serves them best. As Lorain County Commissioner, I’ll fight against any efforts by county government to take power away from elected officials in townships and municipalities when it comes to issues that directly affect their constituents.
I hope this gives you a better feel for the things we have in common. When it comes time to vote in the 2012 Lorain County election, I’d be honored to get your support for commissioner. Please feel free to contact me personally at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions that I can clarify.
