Guest Post: Lorain County Woodcarvers Club
January 20, 2012
The following is a guest blog post from the Lorain County Woodcarvers Club.
Welcome to the Lorain County Woodcarvers’ Club. Our mission is to promote and encourage wood carving throughout the county. This includes chip carving, relief carving, whittling, in-the-round carving, pyrography (wood burning) and much more. The level of experience of our members range from “Beginner” to “Master Carver”.
We have a business meeting the second Tuesday of each month at the Lucy Idol Center (see map on our web site). Also, we have an “OPEN CARVE” night every other Wednesday at the same location – check the calendar on our web site for dates.
Not sure if you have an interest in carving? Stop in on an “Open Carve” night and chat with the members. See what members are working on. We have wood, extra knives and safety equipment so you can do a little carving yourself to see what it’s like!
New members are ALWAYS welcome!
Hope to see you there!

Amherst Ohio: Update On Columbia Gas Improvement Project At Milan Ave. & Lake St.
January 20, 2012
Mr. Ray Frank of Columbia Gas has provided an update to Mayor David Taylor on the project at the intersection of Milan Avenue and Lake Street. Here is his message:
Mayor Taylor:
I would like to provide you with an update on our service improvement project and the excavation at the intersection of North Lake and Milan. We are approximately 80% complete with our work on this project and expect to have the final service improvements completed next week, save for any cold or snowy conditions. We have successfully worked around some of the cold snaps we’ve experienced as we bring an improved delivery system to the residents in this area and the City’s Service Garage complex. This improved delivery system will position the area for future growth and development.
The excavation at the intersection of North Lake and Milan is the site of the interconnection of the new system and a temporary regulating device. The final work at this site will be completed the first week of February and the excavation will be filled in and restored as much as possible with final restoration scheduled for the spring. We appreciate the opportunity to invest in the infrastructure in the City of Amherst and for the patience the residents have exhibited during our work. Please contact me with any questions you, City Council, or the residents may have regarding any of our work.
Thanks,
Ray Frank
Amherst Ohio Rotary Club Annual Wine Tasting & Auction
January 19, 2012
The Amherst Rotary Club will be hosting their 8th Annual Wine Tasting & Auction Event on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 7-10 PM at the St. Joseph Church Social Hall in Amherst. They invite everyone to come join them on the 28th to enjoy some wonderful wine and to visit with the Rotarians. Cost is $25 person which includes 12 tasting tickets and a complimentary buffet of hors d’oeuvres and snacks. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the UPS Store on Leavitt Road, Amherst Chiropractic on Cooper Foster Park Road, or the Amherst Party Shop. Tickets will also be available at the door.
The Amherst Rotary Club has been instrumental in providing scholarships for Amherst and Firelands High School seniors. They also implemented the SOS program that pays high school students to tutor younger students in a formal setting.
Internationally, they have been instrumental in providing the Tarahumara Indian children of Chihuhua, Mexico, with much needed educational and vocational supplies, and have aided in the solar hot water project with the Rotary Mexico Mission Project. Currently, they are working on providing a roof for a children’s cancer clinic in Guatemala.
President Dr. Jeremy Watson hopes to get an ambulance donated for this small clinic. If all goes well, he and a few others will be driving it down sometime in 2012. “This is what Rotary is all about: Providing humanitarian assistance in education and healthcare to better the lives of people all over the world. I am very proud to be associated with such a fine organization,” said Sterna.
This event has grown in popularity from the first year’s 80 attendees to last year’s over 350 guests. The increased success is attributable to the dedication of the Amherst Rotarians and the generosity of it Corporate Sponsors….Amherst Manor Retirement Center and Key Bank.
