Amherst, Ohio

Amherst Councilman Phil Van Treuren

At-Large Councilman Phil Van Treuren announced today that he will run for re-election to Amherst City Council in 2011, promising to personally deliver his petition to the home of every resident who wishes to sign it — regardless of their political party.

Van Treuren said he will be mailing hundreds of hand-written postcards to Amherst residents of all parties, encouraging them to call if they wish to sign his petition.

“Many candidates try to circulate their election petitions out of the public eye and only gather signatures from their political party friends,”  Van Treuren said.  “I want every Amherst resident to have the opportunity to sign my petition, regardless of whether they are Democrats, Republicans or Independents.”

Van Treuren, whose ran as a first-time candidate in 2009, was the city’s top vote-getter in the Council At-Large race that year.  He attributed his win that year to the support he received from residents across the political spectrum.

“I had one simple strategy in 2009: to work as hard as I possibly could and show residents how seriously I would take my job on City Council,” Van Treuren said.  “I was proud to have the support of Democrats, Republicans and Independents, and I plan on working even harder to earn their votes again in 2011.”

Van Treuren, a former officer in the United States Army, walked the entire City of Amherst five times in 2009, and wore same combat boots he donned in Basic Training while knocking on doors.  He said that he plans on wearing his Army boots again in 2011 when he re-visits  Amherst neighborhoods.

“I wore those boots during some of the most challenging experiences of my life, and I’m looking forward to lacing them up again next year on the campaign trail,” Van Treuren said.
